NASA Alert of huge solar flare aimed at Earth to hit this weekend

A major solar flare that erupted from the Sun on Thursday, October 28, will reach the Earth over the weekend.

NASA reports this as a significant burst classified as an X1-class flare.

A G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watch is in effect for 30 – 31 October, 2021, following a significant solar flare and Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the sun that occurred around 11:35 a.m. EDT on Oct. 28.

The CME departed the Sun at a speed of 973 km/s and is forecast to arrive at Earth on 30 October, with effects likely continuing into 31 October.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation, they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the image of a solar flare seen in the bright flash at the Sun’s lower center on Oct. 28, 2021.

NASA observes the Sun and our space environment constantly with a fleet of spacecraft that study everything from the Sun’s activity to the solar atmosphere, and to the particles and magnetic fields in the space surrounding Earth.
