Mercedes-Benz adds ChatGPT into cars with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service

Mercedes-Benz announced that it will be bringing ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, into its cars. Starting today June 16, owners in United States can join by using the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program.”

The chatbot will be integrated into the automaker’s MBUX infotainment system and will be able to answer questions, provide directions, and control features in the car.

Mercedes-Benz said that the popular chatbot is coming to its cars via the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service launched by the tech giant in March.

Mercedes already have voice control which avoids the need to go pressing numerous buttons and menus. With ChatGPT will be more natural and can even remember conversations.

• Elevated voice command and interaction: ChatGPT enables more dynamic conversations, allowing customers to experience a voice assistant that not only understands voice commands but also engages in interactive conversations.
• Expanded task capability: Whether users need information about their destination, a recipe, or answers to complex questions, the enhanced voice assistant will provide comprehensive responses, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
• Contextual follow-up questions: Unlike standard voice assistants that often require specific commands, ChatGPT excels at handling follow-up questions and maintaining contextual understanding. Drivers can ask complex queries or engage in multi-turn conversations, receiving detailed and relevant responses from the voice assistant.
• Integration with third-party services: Mercedes-Benz is exploring the ChatGPT plugin ecosystem, which would open up possibilities for integration with various third-party services. This could enable drivers to accomplish tasks like restaurant reservations, movie ticket bookings, and more, using natural speech commands, further enhancing convenience and productivity on the road.

ChatGPT is still under development, but Mercedes-Benz says that it will be available in its cars later this year. The automaker says that ChatGPT is just one of the ways that it is using AI to improve the driving experience.

“We are committed to using AI to make our cars safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable to drive,” said Seeger. “ChatGPT is just one example of how we are doing this.”

Mercedes-Benz is not the only automaker that is using AI in its cars. Other automakers, such as BMW and Tesla, are also using AI to develop features such as self-driving cars and voice-activated assistants.

As AI technology continues to develop, it is likely that we will see even more innovative ways for automakers to use AI to improve the driving experience.
