Cannabis-derived drugs such as CBD oil have soared in popularity in recent years, It’s the explosion of the CBD market, a trade that has grown from zero to £50 million per annum in the UK in this very short period.

 

Quality CBD oil is being sold by dozens of companies both online and on the High Street, advertised/labeled as “nutrition additives” and “food supplements,” rather than actual medicines.

 

Cannabis plants are made up of more than 100 different chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors in cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the human brain.

The most well known of the compounds are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

These have different impacts on the body and the mind.

 

Now legal in the UK, and will be possible to get a prescription for oil made from CBD because it won’t get users “high”. By contrast, THC is a psychoactive chemical and is a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

 

What’s more, CBD “reduces the expression of proteins involved in creating new fat cells, and it boosts the number of mitochondria in your brown fat cells”, says Men’s Health. This could further increase their fat-stripping power, the scientists suggest. 

 

CBD is available in a range of products sold on the high street and online, including creams, oils, tinctures and edible treats such as gummy sweets.

THC Content below 0.2% – Clarification of the legal limit of THC

There is some confusion in the industry regarding the legal limit for THC in CBD oils and other products in the UK.  To clarify, the 0.2% figure originates from UK laws (derived from an EU Directive) for the cultivation of industrial hemp – the raw material from which CBD is made – not for CBD products. Licenses are required for industrial hemp cultivation of which there are two types: a licence for the cultivation of industrial hemp with a THC content above 0.2% and a licence for one below.

 

So this 0.2% limit does not relate to CBD finished products – the products bought in shops.

 

The correct value for the legal limit of THC is 1 milligram

 

1mg of THC is permitted in any given product that is placed on the UK market. Furthermore, it is not 1 mg per individual dose (tablet, capsule) it is 1 mg per pack.

 

So it is not accurate to say that CBD oils – or any other product – must have a THC level below 0.2% –  CBD oils must have no more than 1 mg of THC in a bottle.
